LONDON [MENL] -- France has sought to sell two warships to the Algerian
Navy.
French industry sources said Algiers and Paris have been negotiating a
deal for two Mistral-type amphibious, assault, command and power projection
ships. The Mistral, a 21,300-ton vessel built by DCNS, was deemed the first
all-electric warship in the French Navy.
The Mistral, designed to harbor 16 helicopters, contains a 5,000 square
meter deck. The platform can accommodate six helicopters simultaneously.
Other contractors in the proposed Algerian project would be the
Paris-based Thales and Chantiers de l'Atlantique. In 2006, the French Navy
introduced Mistral into service.
