WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. military envisions a troubled succession
process in Egypt.
The U.S. Army War College has cited the expected succession of
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak as a major issue for study. In a
publication titled "Key Strategic Issues List," the presidential succession
and its influence on Egypt were deemed as key concerns for U.S. Central
Command.
"With the coming uncertainty in Egypt, what are the possible scenarios
in a post-Mubarak Egypt, and what can be done to help shape and contain the
uncertainty?" the publication asked.
The army publication, dated July 2008 and compiled by Antulio
Echevarria, was meant to guide researchers in study proposals for the U.S.
military. The annual publication also provided issues of "particular
interest" to the Defense Department.
