ABU DHABI [MENL] -- The United Arab Emirates has been struck by rising labor
unrest.
Officials have acknowledged increasing violence and walk-outs by the
huge Asian expatriate labor population in the UAE. They said the unrest has
been fueled by the decline of the U.S. dollar as well as disputes with
employers over salaries and benefits.
"You can't blame an employer who promised a certain dollar wage, and now
that wage is worth much less than a year ago," an official said.
In July 2008, both Kuwait and the UAE were rocked by labor unrest. In
Abu Dhabi, thousands of Indian laborers rioted as part of their demand for
better salaries and conditions.
