U.S. Army To Buy More Israeli-Origin UAVs

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. military has received approval for funding to
purchase tactical unmanned aerial vehicles, including those designed by
Israel.
Officials said the Defense Department intends to reprogram $1.2 billion
for procurement of Israeli-origin and other UAVs. They identified the
Israeli UAV as the Hunter, manufactured by Northrop Grumman and termed the
workhorse of the U.S. Army.
"It will assist our efforts to grow the UAV capability in platforms such
as Shadow, Predator, Reaper, Raven and Hunter," Pentagon spokesman Bryan
Whitman said. "It will allow us to buy additional Scan Eagle detachments."
In an Aug. 8 briefing, Whitman said defense committees in the House and
Senate have approved the Pentagon request to reprogram funds for UAV
procurement. He said the Pentagon would purchase 21 intelligence,
surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft and UAVs.
