WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Libya has removed what officials deemed the final
obstacle toward normalization with the United States.
The State Department said Tripoli has relayed full compensation for the
victims of Libyan attacks against Americans in the 1980s. On Oct. 31, the
regime of Libyan leader Moammar Khaddafy was said to have deposited the
final payment into a $1.5 billion fund meant to compensate the families of
more than 350 Americans killed or injured in Libyan attacks.
"This removes the last obstacle to a normal relationship between the
United States and Libya, and we will work on that now going forward," U.S.
Assistant Secretary of State David Welch said.
