Germany Seeks Purchase Of Advanced Sub

CAIRO [MENL] -- Egypt has been negotiating for the procurement of an
advanced Western submarine.
Industry sources said the Egyptian Navy has been discussing the
acquisition of the Type 214 submarine from Germany's Howaldtswerke-Deutsche
Werft. The sources said the navy was seeking to purchase up to three Type
214s in an estimated $1.8 billion deal.
"This will provide Egypt with a strategic capability," an industry
source said.
