ANKARA [MENL] -- Prime Minister Recep Erdogan, the first civilian leader to
shake up the General Staff, wants Turkey's military to focus on
counter-insurgency.
Officials said Erdogan has ordered his new General Staff to concentrate
on eliminating the growing Kurdish threat to Turkey. They said the Islamist
prime minister wants the Turkish military, particularly the Ground Forces,
to invest greater efforts to halt the flow of Kurdish insurgents from
neighboring Iraq.
