Jordan Intel Expected To Change Gears
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Jordan's intelligence community was expected to lower
its profile and revise threat assessments, a report said.
The Washington Institute said the appointment of a new chief of
Jordanian domestic intelligence could signal a change in policy. In a
report, the institute said the replacement of General Intelligence
Department director Mohammed Dahabi with Gen. Mohammed Raqad could revise
Jordan's attitude toward the Hamas movement.
"The reasons for Dahabi's dismissal are not clear but may relate to the
GID's handling of the 2008 rapprochement with Hamas or to Dahabi's unwelcome
forays into the political arena," the report, titled "Jordan's Intelligence
Chief Sacked: New Policy Toward Hamas?" said. "In either case, his successor
is likely to take the organization on a different path."
