WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Iran was said to have demonstrated its capability to
produce intercontinental ballistic missiles that could strike the United
States over the next two years.
A leading U.S. missile defense expert asserted that Iran's successful
space launch has proven Teheran's ICBM capability. The Feb. 2 launch of
Iran's Omid satellite, tracked by the U.S. military, was said to have
reached an altitude of 224 miles and a speed of 4.7 miles per second.
"Iran demonstrated the key attributes of an intercontinental ballistic
missile in its space launched vehicle," Riki Ellison, president of the
Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, said. "The Islamic republic of Iran
technically validated and proved the use of multiple staging, propulsion,
and precise guidance and control to deliver a payload into orbit."
