JERUSALEM [MENL] -- A former Palestinian Authority security chief has
sought to reestablish his base in the Gaza Strip, a report said.
The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs asserted that ousted PA security
chief Mohammed Dahlan has reappeared after an absence of 18 months. In a
report, the center said Dahlan, a former minister and head of Fatah forces
in the Gaza Strip, was being touted as the proposed commander of PA security
forces at the border points of the Gaza Strip.
"Dahlan appears to have emerged from retirement to his Cairo villa where
he had kept a low profile since the Hamas takeover [in June 2007]," the
report said. "Although Dahlan lost many men and even his home to Hamas, he
continues to enjoy the backing of several thousand armed Fatah activists who
have remained in Gaza under Hamas rule."
