Hamas Victims Block Funds In Egypt
TEL AVIV [MENL] -- An Israeli organization has blocked millions of dollars
of Hamas funds held in an Egyptian bank.
The Israel Law Center, which represents Israeli and American victims of
Middle East insurgency attacks, has obtained a U.S. court judgement to
suspend any transfer of more than $11 million held by Hamas in an Egyptian
bank. The cash, found in a suitcase of a leading Hamas operative who
attempted to cross the Sinai Peninsula into the Gaza Strip, was seized by
Egyptian authorities on Feb. 5. The cash was deposited into the El Arish
branch of the National Bank of Egypt.
"Attorneys for the terror victims immediately served a restraining order
on the NBE's American branch located at 40 East 52nd Street in New York,"
the Israel Law Center said on Feb. 12. "The restraining notice informed the
NBE that the plaintiffs have an unsatisfied judgment which is owed to them
by Hamas in the amount of $116 million and warned the NBE from paying out
the deposited funds or permitting the withdrawal of the funds by Hamas."
