Congress Still Targets Aid To Egypt
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Despite repeated rejections by the administration of
President Barack Obama, Congress still wants to restructure U.S. military
aid to Egypt.
Democrats and Republicans have been mulling proposals to restructure the
annual $1.3 billion in annual U.S. military aid to Egypt. Congressional
sources said members of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Foreign
Relations Committee were discussing ways to end aid for Cairo to procure
U.S. fighter-jets and main battle tanks and instead bolster Egypt's
counter-insurgency capability, particularly in the turbulent Sinai
Peninsula.
