WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States, despite its claim of Arab
concessions, has quietly assessed that the prospect of an Arab League peace
effort with Israel was unlikely.
Officials said the U.S. intelligence community and the State Department
concluded that the Arab League was so riddled with division and rivalry
as to virtually rule out any peace coalition with Israel. They said even
U.S. allies in the Arab world could not agree to any regional initiative,
particularly one concerning the Jewish state.
