WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Israel has decided to evaluate a tactical missile and
rocket defense system deployed by the U.S. military in Iraq.
Officials said the Defense Ministry plans to obtain briefings and attend
a demonstration of the Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar, or C-RAM,
system. C-RAM, produced by Raytheon and which contains the 20 mm Phalanx
close-in weapon system, was designed to track and intercept incoming
projectiles.
"The Vulcan-Phalanx cannons and radar will be part of a multi-layered
defense to intercept rockets," Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said.
"Such defense, as far as I am concerned, is a strategic goal. The goal is to
create a situation where as many rockets as possible launched toward Israel
are intercepted."
