U.S. Sanctions AQI Agent In Syria
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has imposed sanctions on an Al Qaida
operative in Syria.
The U.S. Treasury Department said Saad Uwayyid Ubayd Mujil Al Shammari
has been a senior Al Qaida agent and a facilitator of foreign fighters to
Iraq. The agent, known only as Abu Khalaf, was said to have directed
insurgents and funds to Iraq.
"We will continue to aggressively implement the international obligation
to target Al Qaida-linked terrorists, like Abu Khalaf, who threaten the
safety of coalition forces and the stability of Iraq," Treasury
Undersecretary Stuart Levey said on May 14.
