BAGHDAD [MENL] -- The U.S. military, battling a redeployment deadline, has
accelerated construction of a joint operations command center with the Iraq
Army.
Officials said JOC would be based in Baghdad and facilitate
operations in much of central Iraq. They said the facility would be located
in Forward Operating Base Shield, near Baghdad’s former Olympic grounds
between the Tigris River and Sadr City.
"In some ways, we’ll be closer to the IAs than we were," U.S. Army Col.
Scott Jackson, a battalion commander in the 1st Cavalry Division, said.
